Action Recognition based on Hierarchical Self-Organizing Maps
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose a hierarchical neural architecture able to recognise observed human actions. Each layer in the architecture represents increasingly complex human activity features. The first layer consists of a SOM which performs dimensionality reduction and clustering of the feature space. It represents the dynamics of the stream of posture frames in action sequences as activity trajectories over time. The second layer in the hierarchy consists of another SOM which clusters the activity trajectories of the first-layer SOM and thus it learns to represent action prototypes independent of how long the activity trajectories last. The third layer of the hierarchy consists of a neural network that learns to label action prototypes of the second-layer SOM and is independent to certain extent of the camera’s angle and relative distance to the actor. The experiments were carried out with encouraging results with action movies taken from the INRIA 4D repository. The architecture correctly recognised 100% of the actions it was trained on, while it exhibited 53% recognition rate when presented with similar actions interpreted and performed by a di↵erent actor.

Steel consumption is a critical factor affecting pricing decisions and a key element to achieve sustainable industrial development. Forecasting future trends of steel consumption based on analysis of nonlinear patterns using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques is the main purpose of this paper. Because there are several features affecting target variable which make the analysis of relations...
متن کاملHierarchical Clustering Analysis with SOM Networks
This work presents a neural network model for the clustering analysis of data based on Self Organizing Maps (SOM). The model evolves during the training stage towards a hierarchical structure according to the input requirements. The hierarchical structure symbolizes a specialization tool that provides refinements of the classification process. The structure behaves like a single map with differ...
متن کاملOn Face Recognition Using Hierarchical Self-Organized Gabor Features
Gabor-based face representation has achieve enormous success in face recognition. However, one drawback of Gabor-based face representation is the huge amount of data that must be stored. Due to the nonlinear structure of the data obtained from Gabor response, classical linear projection methods like principal component analysis failed to reduce this large amount of data. As a way to solve this ...

We present an approach for abstracting invariant classifications of spatiotemporal patterns presented in a highdimensionality input stream, and apply an early proof-of-concept to shift and scale invariant shape recognition. A model called Hierarchical Quilted Self-Organizing Map (HQSOM) is developed, using recurrent self-organizing maps (RSOM) arranged in a pyramidal hierarchy, attempting to mi...
متن کاملImage retrieval using hierarchical self-organizing feature maps
This paper presents a scheme for image retrieval that lets a user retrieve images either by exploring summary views of the image collection at dierent levels or by similarity retrieval using query images. The proposed scheme is based on image clustering through a hierarchy of self-organizing feature maps. While the suggested scheme can work with any kind of low-level feature representation of ...
متن کاملFINGeR: Framework for interactive neural-based gesture recognition
For operating in real world scenarios, the recognition of human gestures must be adaptive, robust and fast. Despite the prominent use of Kinect-like range sensors for demanding visual tasks involving motion, it still remains unclear how to process depth information for efficiently extrapolating the dynamics of hand gestures. We propose a learning framework based on neural evidence for processin...
